Magnificent Bastard I don't even remember why I first picked this up, but I just watched the box set of the first two seasons of Trailer Park Boys, an interesting little series out of Canada. This is definitely worth checking out.

The series revolves around two main characters, Julian and Ricky, but it is very much an ensemble piece, starring all of the residents of a trailer park and shot very much like COPS (cameraman's point of view). The show took me a little bit to get into, one minute I wasn't sure if I liked it, next thing I knew I was through the first DVD.

In addition to being shot in a similar style, the show also reminded me of COPS in that the scenes with many of the residents come off like an episode of COPS where the cameraman stuck around after the real cops left. It's just an extended look at the lives of people you usually only see in news clips after the "incident". And in many of the scenes, life in the trailer park comes off looking pretty good in a weird sort of way.

The funniest guy on the series is probably Bubbles, played by Mike Smith. He was originally the sound guy on the pilot, and was seen by the director clowning around and doing a character he had been doing for friends for years, Clattenberg started writing it into the show, and as Bubbles became more popular, Mike Smith became a full time actor. His character is a little slow, a little simple, but not nearly as slow or simple as he seems, and in his simplicity he is often a sort of moral counterpoint to the other residents.

I really dug this, and I can't wait to see the rest of the series. There was also a movie released on October of 2006, and I'm hoping to find a screening or get my hands on a screener very soon. The soundtrack to the movie was released on Anthem records, and features Rush and a band called "The Big Dirty Band", featuring Geddy and Alex, who also appeared in an episode as himself.

Here's a compilation of some of the best clips from the show, just to get your interest up., and a video by The Big Dirty Band for all of you Rush fanatics out there!
