And all I can say is WOW . . . This movie fucking rocks! Beaux Justice and I caught an early screening of Hostel: Part II this weekend, and it's safe to say we both dug it very muchly.
Actually, that's an understatement.
This is not a movie you want to take your grandmother to, unless she's really really cool and a fan of Lucio Fulce movies . . . or you really don't like her and want to see her cry. Eli Roth garnered quite a bit of criticism with the first Hostel, with many critics saying it was sadistic and brutal beyond redemption. Like that's a bad thing?
Thankfully, Roth has responded with a film that's even more sadistic and brutal. Hostel: Part II is not a "horror movie" in the classic sense - meaning it's not really about creating a sense of dread and fear. It's much more camp than that . . . and in a good way. It's not scary . . . it's gruesome. It made me flinch a few times, and that ain't easy to do. The gore factor is offset with a large amount of humor . . . and let's be honest, that's not an easy thing to do. And oh, what gore! I've heard the term "bloodbath" used before, but I've never seen an actual bloodbath depicted in such a beautiful and elegant way . . . or at least as elegant has anything can be with Heather Matarazzo screaming in fear and agony as she . . . nope, no spoilers for you!
Fans of Hostel will be happy to see that the movie actually ties up loose ends from the first one (no, I'm not being sarcastic), and brings back everyone's favorite street urchins for more fun and games. But Roth goes further and delves deeper into the inner workings of the murder-for-profit organization "Elite Hunting", including a bidding war for our three female victim/protaganists. Sequels have a tendency to suck, but Hostel: Teil Zwei is just as good as, if not superior to, the original. And fans of old-school splatter films will be thrilled to see a cameo by Ruggero Deodato, director of the classic exploitation film Cannibal Holocaust.
Brutal? Yes. Sadistic? Hell yes. Fun? More fun than a barrel of brutal sadistic cybermonkeys! Go see it, my twisted little CyberMonk-lets . . . you'll dig it the most. Unless you're a little girl.
