Far Out
Phil Mucci and the Hive are back with a new short that's . . . groovy, man!
Starring: Carly Turnbull, Jake Suffian, Merritt Choate
Rating: Phil Mucci
Directed By: Phil Mucci
Runtime: 5 minutes
I was lucky enough to preview this gem at the 2006 Fantastic Fest where the Hive's first effort, The Listening Dead, cruised to a BEST SHORT FILM award and, though mistakenly stuck in the comedy category, still took third at this year's festival. Phil Mucci, Sean Joyner et al blaze a new path with a 5 minute talkie that evokes a 70s-Valley of the Dolls-type feeling but with a modern sensibility and style all it's own. Mucci's influences (Bava, Franco, Argento, Fulci, etc) are represented but rather than ape their styles the Hive crafted a cinematically gorgeous, incredibly detailed horror-comedy that is at once an homage as well as a throwback that would have felt right at home in the era...and it's only 5 minutes long! One of Mucci's great strengths as a director is the ability to pack so much story and visuals into an admittedly short film that there is a thrill of discovery every time it's viewed, and never more so than on the big screen where the details just pop out.

CarlyMucci is a regular on the festival circuit as well so theater screenings have never been easier. What these guys would do with a feature! Having talked with Phil about his planned full-length debut(s) gets me even more excited for his future projects and what his unique vision has in store for the viewing audience. He is one burgeoning talent that could take the tired phrase "must see" and make it true.

I urge you to take a look at this wonderfully crafted, funny-as-hell,watch it ten times and still see something new modern classic. Kudos to Phill Mucci and the Hive!
