Walking out of the screening of 28 Weeks Later, one word immediately came to mind . . . DAMN! At first glance, you might be afraid this movie would disappoint. It's a sequel (strike one), no original cast members (strike two), and a new director and screenwriter (strike three). You would be totally wrong! Not only is it a great sequel, it might actually be better than the original.
I wish I could tell you why this movie is so great, but I have to be very sketchy on details, spoilers would be criminal for this one. I can honestly say that from the opening scene, you'll either be captivated or you'll want to leave. If 28 Days Later was too much for you, you might want to skip this one and wait for Shrek the Third. The film opens during the time of the original, and then, after a mind-blowing set-up, jumps ahead (about 7 months). England has been ravaged by the Rage virus, but it's believed to be under control now, and NATO forces are repopulating London with survivors. Unfortunately for them, the virus isn't gone, and all hell is about to break loose again. Once the virus breaks loose again, you'll be treated to some of the greatest action sequences ever. Planet Terror may have done zombies and a helicopter first, but that doesn't lessen the impact of this one. But it's not just the violence, gore, and action that make me love this film. It's genuinely one of the darkest films in recent memory, and that's a good thing. Happy endings, resolution . . . a CyberMonkey craves not these things.
I really don't want to say much else, anything more would give too much away. If you liked 28 Days Later, you'll absolutely freaking love 28 Weeks Later, and that's all you need to know. Now get up, get a ticket, and go see it. I promise it will leave you wanting more, and you'll get it - 28 Months Later is already in the planning phase.
